Rashida Jones Will Brave Black Friday in NYC. But She Might Cry While Doing So.

By Elizabeth Thompson

rashida.jpgShoppers at the Limited pop-up shop on Spring Street got to do a bit of early holiday shopping for a good cause last night when Parks and Recreation star Rashida Jones hosted a benefit for Peace Games, a non-profit that teaches kids to resolve classroom conflicts without violence. Jones, who described Peace Games as "the missing piece in education," told us she got involved with the program after a friend introduced her to founder Eric Dawson, with whom she attended Harvard but didn't know because, "he was busy being awesome and creating Peace Games and I don't know what I was doing."

After Jones gracefully shut down another reporter who inquired about her rumored relationship with John Mayer, she chatted with PAPERMAG about her plans to take on Black Friday sales, wondered aloud about why her Parks and Recreation character Ann Perkins, a nurse, is always hanging around City Hall, and her favorite New York City park.

How's your holiday going? Is Parks and Recreation on a break?
Yes. I'm sort of the wayward child who came to New York to do press. It's fun. I feel a little bit like I'm playing hooky.

London Fashion Week Report: The Topshop Unique Show

By Alannah Sparks

lfw09-topshop.jpg

Philip Green pulled out the big guns for the Topshop SS10 presentation, and the result was a stellar front row. Everyone for the old brigade (Twiggy, Erin O’Connell) to the glamorous neophytes (Chung, Lezark), to the big old superstars (Kate Moss) came to support the show.

With an eye-squintingly bright LED backdrop the show was an unabashed, riotous, rip-roarious return to the Eighties. Acid-wash denim? Check. Crop top and bicycle shorts? Check. Iron-on patches and be-ribboned side ponytails? Check, check, check. Punky Brewster would have been proud.

But however much the overall styling appealed to the young at heart, there were some key pieces that offered real substance for those more serious about style setting. Body-skimming maxi dresses in acid-colored geometric patterns are no doubt going to be a key shape come summer, and a slate grey romper suit brought an unusually sophisticated edge to the often puerile piece.

The classic Topshop pieces were delivered with the usual flair -– brightly patterned Ra-Ra skirts and sharply cut blazers will keep the majority of their fan base happy.
We can leave the chiffon leggings and rubber shorts to the hardcore Unique gals.

London Fashion Week Report: A Quick Chit-Chat with Designer Barbara Hulanicki

By Alannah Sparks

BarbaraHulanicki_092209_01.jpg

NAME: Barbara Hulanicki
OCCUPATION: Designer, Biba
SPOTTED: Outside the Topshop show, where she'd missed sitting front row next to her friend Twiggy because she got stuck in traffic.
BARBARA, YOU'VE MISSED THE SHOW! Oh God, there was some big charity cycling demonstration going on at Trafalgar Square, a complete disaster.
ARE YOU GOING TO ANY OTHER SHOWS? No! I'm going to the party tonight and that's about it for me, can't keep up with all this Fashion Week business. I've got some appointments though... I'm doing some wallpaper with Graham & Brown so that'll be launching soon. I really came for the Beyond Biba film, but seem to have missed out on that end of things too.
CAN WE EXPECT ANOTHER TOP SHOP COLLECTION? Yes it's coming in January; I've just come from fittings there.
ANY HINTS OF WHAT'S COMING UP? Well, unfortunately they won't let me do any black -- ever! I've got one jacket, that's all. Apart from that, lots of dresses, micro short!
WHAT ARE YOU WEARING NOW? This is a Zara jacket, i love Zara -- their tailoring is great. The bag is one of my own, black of course.
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR GLASSES FROM? Oh dear, what's that little place in Knightsbridge, it's been there forever, in a tiny little alley.... oh -- Cutler & Gross. But they've put in some very strong lenses for me so I can see. Useful that.

London Fashion Week Report: A Quick Chit-Chat With Alexa Chung

By Alannah Sparks

AlexaChung_092209_01.jpg

NAME: Alexa Chung
OCCUPATION: Television presenter
SPOTTED: At the Topshop Show (who wasn't?)
SO ALEXA, FAVORITE THING IN THE SHOW? Um... the sunglasses. they were were my favorite.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D WEAR FROM THE SHOW? Well, to be honest it wasn't really my bag, but lovely all the same. I'm allergic to the '80s you see -- it's a real allergy!
WHAT DECADE BEST DESCRIBES YOUR STYLE? I don't know really... the noughties!
WHAT'S BEEN YOUR FAVORITE SHOW SO FAR? There's been great stuff so far. I really liked Charles Anastase, and loved Margaret Howell. I'm going to Vivienne Westwood next because Pixie's walking in it, and then going to Luella of course -- I love Luella.
ONE LAST QUESTION: NEW YORK OR LONDON? If they could build a hybrid that was New London, and it was a bit like New York in terms of restaurants and skyline, but London with all my friends -- that'd be perfect.

Bargain Alert: Husam Is a TOPMAN

By Luigi Tadini

8.25.09topman01.jpg

The TOPMAN influence has been felt to the core amongst the 20-something hipster gent pool of Manhattan. Their gargantuan flagship store, conveniently located on lower Broadway, offers a labyrinth of plaid, canvas shoes and fitted jeans at low price points that will certainly please both your closet and your pocket. This UK import has helped this editor create elaborate last minute looks in transit between the office and a SoHo cocktail party. Known for its youthful design collaborations and keen approach to fashion, TOPMAN continues to satisfy the cravings of fashion-oriented kids without breaking their second semester budgets.

This fall marks the chain's inaugural men’s jewelry collaboration. Husam-El-Odeh, a native German, moved to London in 1999 and began working as a jeweler practically from the moment he stepped out of Heathrow. He quickly garnered a reputation as a highly original designer. In the past, Husam collaborated with respected catwalk designers such as Marios Schwab and Mihara Yasuhiro, but his venture with Topshop marks his first mass produced collection. Husam’s designs for fall have a simple and masculine aesthetic, taking inspiration from everyday familiar objects found in the ultimate guy’s lair -– the tool shed. The predominantly silver collection of nuts and bolts ranges from bracelets to earrings and are the perfect understated addition to a monochromatic look.

Barbara Hulanicki Chats About Her Cute New TopShop Line

By Mickey Boardman

barbara-hulanicki-topshop.jpg

Barbara Hulanicki is the woman behind the legendary British label Biba. Mega-retailer TopShop invited this fixture of the swinging London fashion scene (who's been transplanted to Miami for a few years) to come up with a collection, and the first day the line hit stores, it sold as much as they expected to sell in a week. Not surprising, as the line of flirty skirts and frocks, signature Biba prints and sexy swimwear is truly cute. Run, don't walk, kids! But if you miss it this time around, worry not: Hulanicki is already at work on a follow-up collection. I recently chatted with Hulanicki about her collab.

So tell me, how did you come together with TopShop?
Oh, I did some illustrations and I had an exhibition in London and the buyer from Top Shop came in to look at the illustrations, and she said, ‘Would you like to do a collection‘ and I said, ‘Yes, of course I would.’

Did you know about TopShop? Are you a bargain fashion shopper?
Oh, yes. It’s not only bargain, though.

That’s true. It’s more expensive than people expect.
No, no, I’ve known it for years. It’s always the first port-of-call. Do you like the shop in NY?

I do. I went to a dinner launching it. Whenever I went to London, I would go to TopShop but it would always be a little too crowded and crazy for me. but I still went to see what the kids are up to…so hip and fun!
It’s good first thing in the morning, actually -- less crazy.

About Last Night... Topshop/Topman Opening, Part III

By Caroline Torem-Craig

aboutlastnight_norm_header.gif

Yesterday morning, promptly at 11 a.m., the front door slowly opened to reveal Sir Phillip Green and Kate Moss on a pedastal, looking like a wedding cake topper, officially christening the Topshop/Topman store in SoHo. It was pretty amazing to see Broadway closed to traffic from Broome to Grand, one could almost hear cries of "the British are coming!" Earlier, PAPERMAG had stopped to speak to young, trendy Londoners Francesca, Lucy, Pia, Kate, Toni, Louise and Natasha, who had been camping out on the street, and were the first on line waiting for the store to open. When asked if it was to see Kate Moss or the clothes, in unison they yelled: "The clothes!"

Later that evening, the festivities of the past several days wrapped up at The Box with an after-party of hijinks and high spirits starring Kate Moss, J. Lo, Marc Anthony, Blake Lively, Penn Badgley, The Greens, but no Mickey Boardman, who was among the "missing in action" cause he was in India judging the Miss India pageant!

aboutlastnight_norm_header.gif

Last night saw the second installment of Topshop/Topman's New York launch, with another fabulous dinner at Balthazar. The weather, intermittent rain à la London, kept even the most persistent paparazzi that hound Kate Moss to a minimum. The supermodel of all supermodels, whose new Topshop line debuts today, dazzled the red carpet, alongside Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Rosario Dawson, Marc Jacobs, among others. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was this morning, which will be followed by a party at The Box tonight, a party so exclusive that each guest must produce a photo ID to attend -- I kid you not!

Last night was the first chapter in the three-day-long celebration of Topshop/Topman's arrival in New York. The poster hanging in the corner deli at Spring and Broadway said it all: "Everybody Loves Topshop!" And that was echoed over and over again throughout the night by Jimmy Fallon, Michelle Trachtenberg, Emily Mortimer, Annabelle Dexter Jones, Ann Dexter Jones, Caridee English, Emma Roberts and even Jay-Z. When asked why she came to the party, Taylor Momsen said, "Why wouldn't I? They gave me great clothes!" Georgina Chapman, who can certainly have her pick of wares to wear, put it this way: "Now I don't have to go all the way to London to check out the clothes. I always stop by when I go abroad!" Topshop/Topman opens Thursday morning in SoHo at 478 Broadway. Stay tuned for more coverage!

Eight Items or Less: Necrophilia Is Back, TopShop Is Coming to Broadway and DJ AM Is Spinning at the Hawaiian Tropic Zone

By Gary Pini

1. When Popbitch reported the following, we immediately thought it was just an urban legend: a retired American undertaker told a London bartender that after Marilyn Monroe died and her body was taken to the morgue, all the local undertakers took turns having sex with the body. Now we're not so sure. News channel 1010 WINS reports that a 24 year-old lab technician was arrested this week for allegedly having sex with a dead 92 year-old woman at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, New Jersey.

2. We've been worrying about holiday shopping but managed to cross off one loved-one with The Pet Driver's License. Only $29.95 will get you a pet's picture on the state license of your choice. And: "it's not just for pets. Use it for teddy bears and dolls, too!"

3. Retail news via racked.com and eater.com: British fashion retailer Topshop is moving into 478 Broadway and Yellow Rat Bastard is moving out. L.A. chain Fatburger is coming to New York Ciy, on the corner of Bleecker and Macdougal. The Shake Shack in Madison Park is going to stay open 365 days a year -- well, maybe not on Xmas.

4. Hilarious PAPER Nightlife Awards presenter Michael Musto whips out his crystal ball and predicts for AM New York: "a major explosion of great nightlife in New York City, though it might not be until 2013." In the meantime, Hawaiian Tropic Zone in Times Square has received a hard-to-get cabaret (aka "dancing allowed") license and has booked DJ AM.

5. Mickey Rourke did not have a great Halloween. The Miami Herald reports the actor arrived at Miami club Mokai with a hot blonde last night only to encounter another recent date who attacked and bit him on the face, drawing blood. Ouch!

6. Thrill Jockey Records is having a two-day birthday party -- their 15th -- on December 14 and 15 at the Logan Square Auditorium in Chicago. Expect the Fiery Furnaces, Sea and Cake, Trans Am etc. $50 for both nights.

Mr. Mickey Takes on Paris Fashion Week: Made in Heaven Jeans

By Mickey Boardman

paris fashion week

madeinheaven.jpgmadeinheaven2.jpg

In between high fashion runway presentations yesterday, Mr. Mickey took a little break and sashay'd over to the outrageously luxurious Park Hyatt Vendome for a meeting with Chloe Lonsdale and Misty Twigg of Made in Heaven Jeans. The line was started in the '70s by Chloe's godfather. Her mother was a big time model and her father started a chain of jeans stores that was eventually bought by the owner of Top Shop. Chloe has brought the line back and the cuties are going crazy for it. The jeans are all named after European Cities -- the Oslo, the Berlin, the Paris, etc. and the sailor jeans are particularly adorable. They're at Intermix, Bergdorf's and coming soon to Barneys (that's just in New York, kids). How cute are these girls? That's Chloe on the left and Misty on the right. What is it about these British girls that makes them so stylish and irresistible?

Kate Moss, Art Muse

By David Hershkovits

kate moss marc quinn

Kate Moss's Topshop line makes its U.S. debut tomorrow at Barney's. Many early reviews for her Topshop line have been less than flattering, but there's no accounting for taste, so expect to see these items flying off the racks. The cash registers will be ringing not only for Moss and Barneys, where it will be among the cheapest items sold in the store, but also for artist Marc Quinn. Quinn's sculptures of Moss in various yoga positions are on display at the Mary Boone Gallery through June 30. This is far from the first time Moss has served as muse for artists. Artcritical reminds us that W, following in the footsteps of British Vogue, commissioned artists and photographers to immortalize the uber model waif as well. The list of artists (not commercial photographers) who have used her in their work include Chuck Close, Lucian Freud, Alex Katz, Lisa Yuskavage, Richard Prince, Chapman Brothers, Gary Hume and Tom Sachs.

Eight Items or Less: Tracy Morgan SCRAMs, Vanity Fair Discovers Yoga and Pete Wentz Gets His East Village on Tonight

By Alexis Swerdloff

kate moss pete wentz ashlee simpson dance dance revolution

1. It's an exciting time to be English. Kate Moss’s Top Shop line debuts tomorrow! According to Reuters, “To try prevent fights among shoppers when the doors open, each person will be able to buy only five items.”

2. Apparently, Vanity Fair is running a “yoga spread” with high-profile yogaphiles (Donna Karan, Sting and Trudie Styler, Ali MacGraw, etc.) for their June issue. Doesn’t that seem very 1997 to you?

3. Ben Brantley gives new musical Legally Blonde a pretty middling review in the Times today calling it superficial, potentially anti-lesbian and compares watching the show to eating candy. While a cute comparison, he took the candy metaphor and ran with it in a serious way. In the first three grafs alone, he mentions that audience members might want to floss between songs, and dropped M&Ms, Hershey’s, empty-calories, Gummi-Bears and “confectionary charms.” We get it, it’s candy-like. No need to hit us over the head.

4. We’ve never heard of a SCRAM (Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring) bracelet before, but apparently Tracy Morgan has to wear one! A result of a DUI charge and a subsequent probation violation, Morgan will have to wear a SCRAM for the next 90 days that will check his blood alcohol content every 30 minutes. How Orwellian! Now that Alec Baldwin may not return to 30 Rock for a second season, we especially hope that Morgan doesn’t mess up and drink, because a 30 Rock without Baldwin and Morgan would be no 30 Rock at all!

5. So long dodgeball, hello Dance Dance Revolution. According to the New York Times, gym teachers across the country are using the Japanese video game Dance Dance Revolution in P.E. classes. The article suggests that “more than 1,500 schools are expected to be using the game by the end of the decade.”

6. Tonight’s the opening of the Pete Wentz/Gym Class Heroes bar in the East Village… Look out for Wentz’s GF Ashlee Simpson on Avenue A.

7. Feist’s The Reminder received a whopping score of 8.8 on Pitchfork today. Go, Feist, go!

Sneak Peek at Looks from Kate Moss for Topshop

By Carol Lee

kate moss, topshop

Kate Moss for Topshop is almost here (Yayee!) -- May 1st. I can't think of a non-designer who's more qualified to have her own collection than Kate Moss. She is the most fantabulous model of our time and is a bona-fide style icon who arguably has more influence on how young women want to dress than Anna Wintour. So needless to say, it is so exciting to see what Miss Moss has pulled from the lot of her own favorite outfits to cull together a line for Topshop this spring! Here's a sneak peek at the best of the Kate Moss for Topshop look book which is all about Kate and her BFF Irina Lazareanu playing dress-up!! Hint: Expect signature Kate Moss items such as cropped skinny jeans, tuxedo vests, vingtage-esque mini-dresses and an overall rock 'n' roll, sexy vibe with a splash of modern boheme.

And go to this web site (katemosstopshop.com) for more on Kate and Irina!!!

p.s. For those of us who are not going to be across the Atlantic near a real Topshop store, you can go nuts on their web site.
