Legally Blonde Takes on a 9th Life as a Reality Show
By Whitney Spaner

It started out as a film. Then there was a sequel. Then it went to Broadway and was aired live on MTV and subsequently nominated for an Emmy. Now, draining what has to be the last of the Elle Woods enterprise, MTV is airing a Legally Blonde reality show a la last year's NBC series You're the One that I Want (which cast the leads for a revival of Grease), but this time girls will audition to replace the current Elle Woods on Broadway, Laura Bell Bundy. The host of the show will be Haylie Duff (sister of Hilary) who has played the evil Amber Von Tussle in Hairspray on Broadway. It will air on Mondays in The Hills spot (10 p.m.) starting June 2nd. Oh my Goodness this sounds like more fun than a beach themed fraternity mixer!
Pictured are Haylie Duff and Laura Bell Bundy bonding in Bundy's dressing room.

Tweeny Boppers on Broadway
By Whitney Spaner

I don't know whether to feel hopeful or disgusted. According to an article in yesterday's New York Times, Wicked, and to a larger extent Legally Blonde, have apparently paved the way for an onslaught of tween-targeted Broadway shows. Times reporter Campbell Robertson writes that after the surpise success of Wicked and the planned success of Legally Blonde with the 10-14ish-year-old female population, there are more shows in the planning stages geared towards this demographic that will grace the Great White Way in the coming years. They include 13, about a 13-year-old girl from New York who moves to India, Princesses, described by Robertson as "High School Musical meets Gossip Girl" and a musical based on the movie Clueless.

Matt Cavenaugh Back on Broadway!
By Whitney Spaner
One of my favorite Broadway cuties, Arkansas native Matt Cavenaugh (he has the cutest southern drawl!) will be back on Broadway next year in Harvey Fierstein and John Bucchino's new musical A Catered Affair. He was most recently seen playing a double role in the Tony-nominated Grey Gardens, which closed at the end of July after running almost a year.

On the Red Carpet at the 61st Annual Tony Awards
By Whitney Spaner

Instead of watching the Sopranos finale or attending the Rufus Wainwright PAPER party, I decided to channel my inner aggressive journalist and line up on the red carpet at the 61st Annual Tony Awards. After the red carpet, it was on to the media room where the Tony-winners speak and then to the Spring Awakening after-party at Spotlight NYC -- the best place to be, as the musical took home the the biggest award of the night, Best Musical, as well as many others. Here are some highlights of my evening.
• I was surprised about how sweet and slightly self-deprecating, Tony-winner Billy Crudup (pictured above with his mom) seemed and how not-nice his ex-girlfriend and current girlfriend of the equally charming Hugh Dancy seemed. She brushed past us on the red carpet and didn’t seem in a good mood at all. I’ll give her a break though, she was there with Hugh (although they didn’t arrive together) and Billy was of course there and won! That might have been a very sticky situation for her! I would give these three the award for most awkward run in of the night!
• Ethan Hawk seemed a bit drunk as he was being dragged around by his publicist on the carpet. But when you are that cute and talented, I say have as many cocktails whenever and whereever you want them.

One Chihuahua's Long Road to Broadway
By Whitney Spaner
Chico is the cutie-pie chihuahua who nabbed the role of Bruiser, Elle Woods’s pet accessory in the Broadway production of Legally Blonde. But apparently, life was not always chicken treats and plush dressing rooms for Chico. I was saddened to read that Chico was found at the Newark Humane Society shivering in his cage, and previously abused. Broadway dog trainer extraordinaire Bill Berloni, who owns 16 rescue-dogs-cum-performers, called the shelter to see if they had anyone matching the Bruiser profile and lo and behold the two-year-old Chico got a second chance. Both the New York Times and the New York Post wrote about about his habits and day to day life. He visits Cindy Adams’s apartment, dines on restaurant patios, and spends nights with Legally Blonde beauties Laura Bell Bundy and Annaleigh Ashford. And his payment? 50-60 treats per performance! This dog has died and gone to heaven!
Here’s a pic of Chico at the opening night party of Legally Blonde in a mini tux with costar Laura Bell Bundy. Hope he had some cocktails to unwind!

Opening Night: Legally Blonde
By Whitney Spaner

Sunday night was the opening of the new Broadway musical Legally Blonde, based on the movie and the novel (news to me) of the same name. The buzz at the after-party (held at Cipriani 42nd Street) was that it was very entertaining, and for the most part, the reviews that came out yesterday echoed the same sentiment. Ben Brantley of The New York Times said: "But unlike such deadweight musicals as “Footloose,” “Saturday Night Fever” and “Lestat,” “Legally Blonde” never threatens to put you to sleep. On the contrary, its cast members emanate a wired, attention-fixing tirelessness that suggests they have all been subsisting on Red Bull (Elle’s favorite drink, given a jokey product-placement moment in the show)."

Eight Items or Less: Tracy Morgan SCRAMs, Vanity Fair Discovers Yoga and Pete Wentz Gets His East Village on Tonight
By Alexis Swerdloff

1. It's an exciting time to be English. Kate Moss’s Top Shop line debuts tomorrow! According to Reuters, “To try prevent fights among shoppers when the doors open, each person will be able to buy only five items.”
2. Apparently, Vanity Fair is running a “yoga spread” with high-profile yogaphiles (Donna Karan, Sting and Trudie Styler, Ali MacGraw, etc.) for their June issue. Doesn’t that seem very 1997 to you?
3. Ben Brantley gives new musical Legally Blonde a pretty middling review in the Times today calling it superficial, potentially anti-lesbian and compares watching the show to eating candy. While a cute comparison, he took the candy metaphor and ran with it in a serious way. In the first three grafs alone, he mentions that audience members might want to floss between songs, and dropped M&Ms, Hershey’s, empty-calories, Gummi-Bears and “confectionary charms.” We get it, it’s candy-like. No need to hit us over the head.
4. We’ve never heard of a SCRAM (Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring) bracelet before, but apparently Tracy Morgan has to wear one! A result of a DUI charge and a subsequent probation violation, Morgan will have to wear a SCRAM for the next 90 days that will check his blood alcohol content every 30 minutes. How Orwellian! Now that Alec Baldwin may not return to 30 Rock for a second season, we especially hope that Morgan doesn’t mess up and drink, because a 30 Rock without Baldwin and Morgan would be no 30 Rock at all!
5. So long dodgeball, hello Dance Dance Revolution. According to the New York Times, gym teachers across the country are using the Japanese video game Dance Dance Revolution in P.E. classes. The article suggests that “more than 1,500 schools are expected to be using the game by the end of the decade.”
6. Tonight’s the opening of the Pete Wentz/Gym Class Heroes bar in the East Village… Look out for Wentz’s GF Ashlee Simpson on Avenue A.
7. Feist’s The Reminder received a whopping score of 8.8 on Pitchfork today. Go, Feist, go!
