Eight Items or Less: Banksy Film Is Banksy-less & Bargains at the Ace Hotel

3. The Village Voice announced the results of their annual Pazz & Jop critic's poll this week.  Animal Collective's Meriweather Post Pavilion is the #1 album with 1,794 points and 154 mentions.

4. Is South Beach over?  Miami New Times anticipates the demise of "bottle service, D-list celebrities and French doormen" and celebrates the rise of nightlife diversity in downtown Miami and Wynwood.

5. "You have to have balls," Ke$ha tells MuchMusic in Canada.  She claims she once snuck into Prince's Beverly Hills home and gave him a CD of her music.  And yes, that's her singing (but not getting paid) on Flo Rida's "Right Round."

6. The Allen Ginsberg bio-pic Howl screens tomorrow at Sundance followed by a big Diesel-sponsored party.  Meanwhile, the New York Post sent Cindy Adams to talk to James Franco at the Crosby Street Hotel, but she gets hung-up on the lint on the actor's coat:  "If the film is a hit, possibly James Franco will invest in a whisk broom."

3. A group show called "In There, Out Here" curated by Bill Saylor opens tomorrow, January 8, at Leo Koenig Projekte (541 W. 23rd St.).  The exhibit includes works by Jim Drain, Julian Schnabel, Aidas Barekis, Joe Bradley, Brendan Cass, A. R. Penck and more.

4. Here's where to find free Wi-Fi in New York City.

5. Listen to the Top 25 Songs of 2010 condensed into 4 minutes and 46 seconds.

6. Multimedia artists John Burgerman and Jim Avignon have a band called Anxieteam and they are playing Heathers (506 E. 13th St.) on January 17 and Cake Shop (152 Ludlow St.) on the 27th.  (Heathers is one of the only bars in NYC that serves gluten-free beer.)

1. Exploding food is the decade's first trend.  Police in Tennessee are looking for the person that tampered with a ketchup bottle at a Murfreesboro diner and caused it to explode, while over in Irving, Texas, Kraft Foods has been named the official sponsor of the "Cheddar Explosion,"  a contest to determine who gets to trigger the demolition of Texas Stadium in Irving.

2. The New York Times asked the talent buyer at Brooklyn's Bell House why beards are popular in the indie music scene:  "Beards are a way of hiding behind a certain confidence and saying, ' Hey I'm not a clean-shaven, TV-happy, American Idol type.  I'm more a warm cuddly artist..."  So, now you know.

3. Indonesian island Gili Trawangan is the new Ibiza.

4. We're looking forward to February 23 and the release of David Byrne and Fatboy Slim's collab/concept album Here Lies Love, a song-cycle about the life of Imelda Marcos.  The "deluxe package" includes a 100-page book, two CDs and a DVD.  The 22 tracks feature vocals by Tori Amos, Steve Earle, Roisin Murphy, Sharon Jones, Kate Pierson, Sia, Santigold and more.

5. Justin Timberlake has been named the most charitable celebrity of 2009.  The Daily Beast claims that the singer raised $9,198,072 for Shriners Hospitals for Children.

6. Mulchfest 2010 is this weekend, January 9 and 10, in New York City.  Bring your holiday tree to a designated city park so that it can be recycled into mulch.

1. Glen Matlock just appeared at the W hotel down in South Beach last week and we hear he's going to do a special acoustic set of Sex Pistols songs around midnight Friday, December 11, at NUBLU (62 Avenue C between 4th and 5th Streets).

2. The Guardian lists fashion's 25 most influential people.

3. The Morrison Hotel Gallery (313 Bowery) is hosting an exhibit of photos by Emmett Malloy  with a screening of his film "Jack Johnson En Concert" on December 16, doors open at 7 p.m.  Neil Halstead (Slowdrive, Mojave 3) will also be performing at 9 p.m.

4. Artist Eltono has been busy down in South America working on several public art projects in Peru and he files this report on a big wall painting executed in Sao Paulo.  Check it out.

5. Tools of the Trade released a cool 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle featuring "Mandala Grin" by Ron English.  (via Format)

Is one of them Kimora?  Well, we only know that they include Russell's "closest confidantes, fierce gatekeepers, dating coaches, spiritual advisors, philanthropic czars, business liaisons and more."  Sounds like more fun than I Didn't Know I was Pregnant.

2. The Telegraph counts the vehicles at the Copenhagen Climate Summit and finds: 1,200 limos, 140 private planes and only 5 hybrids.

3. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings just released a new holiday song called "There Ain't No Chimneys in the Projects."  There's a free download here.

4. The New York Times is also getting their holiday game on with this recipe for caramel sauce by Thomas Keller.

5. How to slice a bagel into two linked halves.  We always wondered how to do this.

6. Mean Red Productions are having a little party called "Lose Your Shit" (they're getting coal in their stocking for using a naughty word) on Saturday, December 12, at 49 N. 3rd St. in Brooklyn. DJs include Smallchange, Eli Escobar, Dub War DJs and Dirty South Joe.

Eight Items or Less: Art Basel/Miami Edition, Part III

1. Deitch Projects and Tony Goldman have put together an amazing outdoor mural show called "Wynwood Walls" that features new works by the biggest names in the business including Aiko, Jim Drain, Shepard Fairey, Futura, Barry McGee, Kenny Scharf and more.  Be there or be square!  The opening is on Thursday, December 3, from 8 to 11 p.m. at NW 26th Street and 2nd Avenue.

2. Our pal Dante Ross is in town and DJing at The Electric Pickle (2826 N Miami Avenue) on Wednesday, December 2, with locals Manuvers, Sire Esq.A-Train, Tomas and Mr. Brown.  Plus there'll be a skate ramp set up by MIA skate shop and Vans.  Don't forget that the weekly Poplife party is at the same venue on Saturday.

3. This sounds cool: "Littlest Sister 09: The Smallest Art Fair in Town" at the Spinello Gallery (155 NE 38th Street #101) with 50 artists showing "small scale works of art."  The opening is tonight, December 1, from 7 to 10 p.m. BYO microscope.

4. Prince Peter and Mick Rock are hosting a cool party at the Shore Club (1901 Collins Avenue) on Thursday, December 3, with DJs David Katz and Mia Moretti plus special sets by Prince Peter and dreamy Jacob Dekat from Bambi and a live set by Delilah featuring Jamie Burke.

5. We noticed that superstar DJ Tiesto is selling his South Beach townhouse (furnished) for $2,750,000. It comes complete with a giant mural of the man himself standing, arms outstretched, in front of a massive crowd of ravers. Jeff Morr at Majestic Properties (305 398 7888) has the exclusive listing.

6. We saw Rostarr painting a shuttle bus that runs around the beach, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

7. Pharrell Williams is in Miami promoting a new film (in which he appears) by Yi Zhou called The Ear. Its got music by Ennio Morricone, costumes by Rick Owens and BBC Ice Cream.

8. Please note that the Kid Sister/Giant Step/Svedka party is at the Delano and not at the Shore Club.

2. Nine Inch Nails are selling off some of their gear on eBay. Says their official statement, "We've been going through the NIN touring and studio rigs and are getting rid of a large selection of gear and equipment the band is no longer in need of. We do not know which (if any) tour these items are from unless specified, nor can we get any items autographed, so please do not ask."

3. This Friday is National Cookie Day! Why not make this meta-cookie courtesy of Saveur? It's a cookie filled with chunks of homemade chocolate chip cookie dough. Yummmm.

1. Versace's former South Beach home Casa Casuarina has been closed following the collapse of an alleged Ponzi scheme by one of the mansion's current investors, Scott Rothstein.  Maybe it's time they changed their current tag-line: "An oasis for the privileged few."

2. Shaquille O'Neal (yes, that one) is curating an art exhibit (yikes!) called "Size Does Matter" at the FLAG Art Foundation (545 West 25th Street) from February 19, 2010, to May 27.  Why?  Because Shaq wants to "challenge himself and move outside his comfort zone."

3. Also moving outside of their zone, iconic NYC restaurant Le Cirque (150 East 58th Street) is starting a series of Friday late-night parties beginning tonight, November 20, at 11 p.m.

4. MySpace just launched a page of music charts to track the most popular music on the site.  The #1 song is currently "Fireflies" by Owl City.

5. Converse is hosting a free "celebration of the creative spirit and artist in everyone" during Art Basel/Miami.  The event -- including performances by the band Kinky and "the queen of Spanish hip-hop" Mala Rodriquez -- takes place on December 5, 9 p.m., at 550 NW 29th Street in the downtown Wynwood arts district.

6. There's a group art show called "Mixtape" opening tonight November 20, 6 to 8 p.m., at Jen Bekman Gallery (6 Spring Street) with works by 36 artists.  It's up until January 9, 2010.

7. Look for a pop-up of NYC gallery/bar Max Fish (178 Ludlow Street) opening in Miami during Art/Basel.

Eight Items or Less: Velvet Underground Sorta Reunite & JELLY Pool Parties Sorta in Danger

1. Three former members of Velvet Underground -- Lou Reed, Maureen "Mo" Tucker and Doug Yule -- are getting together for a little chit-chat with writer David Fricke on December 8 at the New York Public Library (Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street).  $25 tickets are available here.

2. "Graffiti is becoming a true art, fine and delicate.  And breakdance is something peculiar," according to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin after jumping onstage at a hip-hop concert last week. Fresh! (via France 24)

3. Hot British duo The Big Pink will be in New York on December 3 (Bowery Ballroom) and December 4 (Music Hall of Williamsburg).  The track to love on their debut album, A Brief History of Love, is "Dominos."

4. An exhibition of photos by Renato D'Agostin and Alessandro Zuek Simonetti opens tonight, November 18, 6 to 8 p.m. at Leica Gallery (670 Broadway at Bond).  Last summer, Simonetti's photos appeared on a line of skateboard decks for Zoo York.

5. Jimmy Kimmel used Yoostar to perform a scene from Friday the 13th last week.  Funny, but we thought Mr. Mickey was better.

6. Philly artist Amanda Blank is opening for Ebony Bones at the free Basel/Miami opening night beach party on December 2 (10 p.m., Collins Park between 21st Street and 22nd Street.)  The Misshapes are DJing at LIV (4441 Collins Avenue) later that night.

7. JELLY NYC's pool parties are in danger of losing their access to East River State Park. According to a press release, "news came from the New York State Parks Department and the Open Space Alliance that the East River State Park may not be available to JELLY for the 2010 season. This will ultimately put an end to the flourishing free summer series." Eight Items or Less: Jay-Z and the Ting Tings, Steam Punk Rock and LEGO Nomenclature

11.13.09eightitems.jpg1. Music collab of the year? Current PAPER cover artists The Ting Tings are working with Jay-Z on their second album. The duo have apparently been signed to his Roc Nation label for North America. 

2. Stop by The Prompt (77 Delancey St.) over the weekend.  This pop-up space or "conceptual social club" is only open from 8 to 11 p.m. through Sunday, November 15. Curated by Sarina Basta and Michael Portnoy as part of Performa 09, it will include "conversation pieces, rules, performances and soundtracks." 

3. Steampunk, guns and guitars.

4. The SCOPE art fair runs in Miami's Wynwood neighborhood from December 2 to 6 and there's a little preview next week (November 18, 8 - 10 p.m.) at 900 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. Multi-media artists "Sweatshoppe" (Bruno Levy and Blake Shaw) will be on hand with films, stop motion cameras and a drum machine that "redefines images in 3D space."

5. LEGO nomenclature.

6. charity:water is hosting a benefit to raise money to produce a short film called Silent Water about water scarcity in India. It's tonight, November 13, at Tribeca Cinema (54 Varick St.) with music by Quest Love, DJ Rekha and DJ Rampage.  Tickets are $25 and doors open at 8 p.m.

2. New York Magazine vs. New York Press: It's on.  Not happy with NYM's Brooklyn Top 40, NYP lists their own.  At least they both like The Drums.

3. The 15 scariest and most relevant beards of all time.

4. Nielsen/Soundscan reports that purchases of vinyl albums increased (again) in 2009 with over 2 million sold. (via Billboard)

5. Foodies (and those in need of good laugh) should check out this Miami New Times review of the new South Beach branch of Mr. Chow.   AND:  We hear that another South Beach restaurant, Red Steakhouse (119 Washington Avenue) is serving the stars of Discovery Channel reality show Deadliest Catch -- crabs, not people.  Supposedly it's one of the only spots in the country that offers the entire Alaskan King Crab and not just the legs.

2. Facebook pulled the plug on Dazzle Dancer Cherry Dazzle (né Cary Curran)'s profile due to "sexually explicit material."

3. Matador just bought the hot record label True Panther Sounds whose artists include Girls, Glasser, Tanlines, Lemonade and Hunx and His Punx (aka "the gay Ramones").

4. Only a couple of minutes left to bid on LEGO's "Story of Christmas" on Goodwill.com. Current bid $3.99.

6. Don't miss "Mother Earth Sister Moon" at 679 Chasama (679 Third Avenue, performances on November 6, 6 and 8 p.m. and November 14 and 21 at 8 p.m.) It's a fashion show that takes place in a giant reconstruction of the spacesuit worn by the first woman in space.  The piece was created by Christian Tomaszewski and Joanna Malinowska with music by Masami Tomihisa.  (Yes, it's part of Performa 09)

Surfing?  '50s music?  Are we in a time warp?  If we told you six months ago that the retro wheels of pop music might be headed back to the beach, you might have laughed.  And if we mentioned Florida?  No way. Well, listen to The Drums and Surfer Blood.  Both bands are from the Sunshine State and both are getting worldwide attention for their hipster-gone-surfing sound.  We're getting a woodie!

3. The Fifth Annual Shred for Your Life Guitar Battle takes place tomorrow, November 3rd at 7 p.m., at Santos Party House (100 Lafayette Street).  This year's judges are David Cross, Jaleel Bunton and Paul Major.

4. Augusten Burroughs is reading from his latest You Better Not Cry: Stories for Christmas today, Monday, November 2, at Barnes & Noble on Union Square.

5. Here's a very awkward Vanity Fair interview with Clive Davis.  It's the 35th anniversary of Clive's Arista Records and he'll be speaking at NYU Kimmel Center (60 Washington Square South) on November 4 at 7 p.m.
